On Thursday, August 25th San Jose Fire hosted a press conference in order to thank local, state and federal officials who were instrumental in assisting San Jose Fire obatain the 15 million dollar SAFER Grant. This grant enabled us to hire back 49 Firefighter. Twenty-two of the 49 San Jose Firefigthters that wee laid-off last year completed their refresher academy and joined us back on the line Friday, August 26th. Congratulations and Welcome !

San José Fire Honors a Young Hero

Careful to let the assembled members of the press know that he is fully 8 1/2 years old, Ishaan Singh and his family sat surrounded by reporters and photographers at San José Fire Station 14 during a ceremony celebrating the young man's heroic actions during a drowning incident in an apartment complex pool.

To honor his heroic deed San José Fire Department Chief William McDonald presented Ishaan with his own SJFD baseball cap, t-shirt and a plaque commemorating his effort. Perhaps even more exciting was a ride in Truck 14 and a tour of a Rural/Metro ambulance.

With cameras rolling, Ishaan and his parents recounted the details of an incredible rescue that began when a 3-year-old child and her grandfather were discovered to have lost consciousness while wading in the shallow end of the pool.

Ishaan reached the little girl pushing her to the edge of the pool where she was pulled from the water and resuscitation was begun. Meanwhile another neighbor had entered the water to rescue the child's grandfather.

Thanks to Ishaan's bravery the little girl was able to fully recover. Her grandfather remains hospitalized in serious condition.

Two-Alarm Fire Leaves 13 Homeless

On Monday, July 25, 2011 at 11:33 AM, the San Jose Fire Department received an emergency call advising of an unknown type fire in the area of West San Carlos Street and Lincoln Avenue.

As Truck and Rescue Medic 30 were being dispatched to the area to investigate the initial call, additional reports of black smoke seen in the area were received prompting an upgrade of the response to a full first alarm.

San Jose Engine 4 arrived on scene within seven minutes and confirmed a working basement fire in a multifamily dwelling. A second alarm was struck at 11:50 AM bringing additional resources to the scene.

Seven residents were able to evacuate the structure on their own as over 30 firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze. Firefighters were able to bring the fire under control by 1:00 PM.

Two residents were transported to a local hospital for observation and the Red Cross responded to assist the 13 people displaced by the fire.

Badges Pinned on Reinstated Firefighters

Members of the San Jose Fire Department, including Fire Chief William McDonald, welcomed back 22 of the 49 firefighters that were laid-off from the Department in August of 2010.

The badge-pinning ceremony, held at the Department's Training Center on July 15, was made possible thanks to a $15 million award received through the Federal Emergency Management Agency's SAFER (Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response) Grants program.

With family, media and Department members looking on the reinstated firefighters were all smiles as they received their badges.

All of the returning firefighters will begin a six week abbreviated refresher academy coordinated by Captains Glen McGuire and Dave Ennes.

San Jose Firefighters welcome the Pink Heels Tour

The “Pink Heels Tour”; PinkFireTrucks.org arrived in San Jose on Saturday, May 21, 2011. The tour travels from city to city with the hope of raising awareness and support for women fighting cancer in their communities. The drivers are full-time firefighters who take periodic time off to drive a portion of the Pink Heals Tour across the nation.

Saturday’s wellness event was held at Camden Community Center with approximately 120 people in attendance including Councilman Don Rocha and staff, community members, San Jose Fire Department, Local 230, Dispatchers and many volunteers.

San Jose Fire Department would like to continue our efforts in supporting community members with cancer by having another tour in 2012. Let’s bring hope, awareness and cancer support to women fighting cancer within our community. We’re looking forward to seeing you at our next event.

San Jose Fire Department 2011 Badge and Recognition Ceremony

On the evening of May 20, 2011, the San Jose Fire Department held a Promotional Badge Pinning and Recognition Ceremony held at the "Roosevelt Community Center" on Santa Clara Street. There were over 400 family and friends in attendance with 86 employees promoted and five to be recognized. Fire Chief William McDonald was there to present all the employees with their new badges as friends and family members proudly pinned them on. Those being badged included Deputy Chiefs, Battalion Chiefs, Captains, Senior Dispatchers, Arson Investigator, Fire Inspectors, Hazmat Inspectors and Fire Engineers. This was the largest badge ceremony in the history of San Jose Fire Department to date. The last ceremony being almost two years ago.

The Ceremony began with Bag Pipes played by retired Captain Joe Roberts, Honor Guard led by FE Jeff Una'Dia and followed by CA Tony Magallon and CA Mary Gutierrez. The National Anthem was sung by FE Mario Cuestas. Emcee CA Scott Kouns announced the honorees one by one up to the stage to receive their new badge while family and friends clapped and cheered. There were several promoted personnel who could not attend because they were on duty or other reasons. The benediction was honorably presented by Chaplin Gary Kalas. The last person recognized and badged was Fire Chief William McDonald. His wife and children flew in from Arizona that day to have the Chiefs youngest son pin his badge, something he had never done. Chief McDonald is a very humble man and not wanting to take the spot light away from those being honored, this came as a complete surprise.
All the guests were treated to the much anticipated promotional cake made by Peter's bakery with special attention to detail from Margaret Aguiar. The ceremony lasted just under 2 hours.

Knights of Columbus Firefighter of the Year 2010 Award

award "Best of the Best". Ruben was chosen by his peers
in Battalion 2 as "Firefighter of the Year". The Knights of Columbus honored him with a plaque at Station 2 and a dinner cooked by the "San Jose Job Corps on April 28, 2011. Congratulations Ruben.

San José Firefighters Save life and encourage residents to learn the Heimlich Maneuver and CPR.

On Monday, March 21st, on the 2700 block of Rainview Drive, Mr. Antonio Cruz was eating dinner when he began to choke on a piece of food. His son Anthony heard noises coming from the kitchen and then saw his father choking; he began to perform the Heimlich maneuver. He happens to be a registered nurse. He told his mother to call 911 and started performing rescue breathing and then CPR. San Jose Fire Department Engine Company 2 “C” shift arrived on scene to assess the situation and perform an advanced life support maneuver using a Magill forceps to remove the food from Mr. Cruz’ throat. On the way to the hospital Mr. Cruz slowly started to breathing on his own and later was conscious and alert. Because Anthony performed the Heimlich Maneuver and CPR prior to Engine Company 2 arrival on scene, it saved vital time to allow the crew; Captain Jay Carranza, Fire Engineer Dan Lizardo, Firefighter Brian Landi and Firefighter/Paramedic Chris Fraser who removed the food stuck in Mr. Cruz’ throat, ultimately saving his life. It was this combination of individuals working with the same goal in mind to save a life and they did!!!

Choking can be treated with abdominal thrusts, also known as the Heimlich Maneuver. This maneuver should be performed only when a person truly can not breathe or is not getting sufficient air to their lungs. If someone is choking, first determine if the person requires assistance by asking if they are okay.

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a combination of rescue breathing and chest compressions delivered to victims thought to be in cardiac arrest. When cardiac arrest occurs, the heart stops pumping blood. CPR can support blood flow to the heart and brain to “buy time” until normal heart function is restored. Contact your local American Heart Association or the American Red Cross for CPR and Heimlich Maneuver class schedules.

Off duty HERO, Captain Ken McCarthy

Theodora Garcia had been a patient at Sutter Tracy Community Hospital since Monday, awaiting the outcome of tests. She went home Thursday, March 31. She’s lucky to be at her Village Garden apartment — and to be alive. Known to all the regulars at Barista’s coffee shop on West 10th Street simply as Dorothy, she always exchanges greetings with fellow coffee-sippers and often engages in conversations. It was Monday morning that the 83-year-old pushed her ever-present walker out the front door of Barista’s and then collapsed on the sidewalk and lost consciousness. Fortunately for Dorothy, among those (including me) who rushed outside to see what the problem was as she lay on her back was Ken McCarthy, who operates nearby Spencer Floor Coverings — and is a captain with the San Jose Fire Department. As Ken, an experienced paramedic, kneeled down beside Dorothy, he noticed that her breathing became labored and then stopped. He checked her pulse — there was none. Without hesitating, Ken applied CPR with rapid chest compressions on the prostrate woman. “I gave her 30 compressions, and then she started breathing again,” Ken said later. “I was relieved she was breathing again, although I might have broken a couple of ribs in the process.” A few minutes later, the Tracy Fire Department arrived, followed by an ambulance. After stabilizing Dorothy, they took her to the hospital. Dorothy suffers from Addison’s disease, a condition of the adrenal glands — “And I don’t have Alzheimer’s,” she emphatically told the medics. Ken went to the hospital Monday to see how she was getting along, but she was still in the emergency room at that time.Josie Schneider, a longtime friend from their days of growing up on nearby dairies in the Manteca area, visited her later. She said Dorothy was alert in the hospital and was happy to go home Thursday. In the hospital, she had received several other visitors and a get-well card passed around Barista’s by Ford and Lisa Borncamp. Yes, she had a couple of broken ribs, but she knew the circumstances and was thankful for Ken’s quick action to restore her breathing. And she learned she did not strike her head on the sidewalk when she fell. Dorothy reiterated to Josie her determination to get back to Barista’s as soon as possible. And the folks there expect to see back any day now. In the meantime, we are all aware of what a close call Dorothy had. SJFD Dispatchers Performance Commendation

The SJFD has been using the National Academy of Emergency Dispatcher's (NAED) Medical Priority Dispatch System (MPDS) for prioritizing EMS responses for over a dozen years. Our dispatchers have been recognized as an accredited Center of Excellence within that system since 2001. After completing an assessment of their performance (individually and collectively) for 2010, an overall compliance percentage of 98.67% was achieved, which is well above the Department and NAED standard. Deserving special mention are the following dispatchers whose compliance was over 99.63%

Truck No. 1 working in the E.R.

On Tuesday February 8th Truck 1B responded to a report of a 2 year old with his finger stuck in the bed of a Pick-up truck. The crew of T1; CA Sean Lovens, FE Derek Parmer, FF Adam Cheney and FF Steve Bevington immediately went to work trying to free the trapped finger. A sawzall was used to cut a portion of the truck completely off so they had better access. AMR transported the little boy to the ER. At that time of transport, he still had his finger stuck in the piece of metal that was cut away from the pick-up. Under better conditions, at the ER, Truck 1 crew continued to cut the metal away. A smaller hand saw was used as they got closer to the finger until the finger was free. This timely and coordinated effort resulted in the little boy leaving the hospital the same day with no permanent negative effects. The father is going to keep the small section of truck that was cut away to give to his son when he is older.

SJFD Celebrates 157!

On January 27th, 2011 the San Jose Fire Department celebrated its 157th year anniversary. The Fire Museum hosted a family event to honor this special day. Many retired SJFD personnel were in attendance along with members of Senior Staff and the line. Fire Chief William McDonald spoke about our history and our hope for the future. This was a fun event that allowed a good cross section of our FD family to reunite. Special thanks to Museum President Chief John McMillan and the rest of the Museum members for coordinating a great celebration.

Engine Company 15 acts swiftly

In December, Engine Company 15 responded to an EMS incident and assisted a female in cardiac arrest. On scene the husband was providing adequate compressions. Engine 15 crew took over patient care and provided timely ALS interventions, including delivering 2 shocks with the defibrillator. The patient had a full recovery and can be seen here with some of the Engine 15 crew members that responded; Captain Eric Peters, FE Tom Newland, FFP Eric Mailander, and FF Kara Danielsen. Engine 15 arrived on scene, continued CPR, established an airway and delivered the first shock within 5 minutes of dispatch! This quick and thorough action along with by-stander CPR allowed for a full recovery of the patient. Picture and story were approved for posting by the patient who wanted to thank the SJFD for their help.

Gift cards given to burn survivors

Recently the Fraternal Order of Eagles and our San Jose Firefighters Burn Foundation, (SJFFBF) teamed up to give four burn survivors gift cards from Target Department store. SJFFBF President Dan Vega, Jeff Perez, Jimmy Aparacio, and Mitch Wisinski escorted the kids thru Target as they picked out toys, clothes and gifts for themselves and their loved ones. Next year the Eagles organization has promised to help out with another donation that will allow ten kids to enjoy this special gift. Thank you to all the Board members of the SJFFBF for continuing to give of their time and talents in making life better for burn survivors and their families.

San Jose firefighters continue Christmas Giving

Although the official Bombero Toy and Food give away program has concluded for this year members of the SJFD continue to give. On Saturday December 18th firefighters received a call from a family with three kids. The father recently had heart surgery and the mother was out of work. They had no Christmas tree or presents but did not give up hope for having a nice Christmas for their children. Members of the fire department stepped up and purchased a beautiful tree, decorations, food, and with the help of Los

Bomberos plenty of presents that are sure to bring a smile on Christmas morning.

The giving spirit at Fire Station 16 is also alive and well. Each shift has adopted a family to help out this year. These are just two examples of what the SJFD is doing across this City to help make this Holiday season a little bit Merrier for kids and their families during these tough economic times. Special thanks to Captain Gerry Laird, Jeff Silva, Matt Brock, Sean Kaldor, and Barry Arata for delivering not only the tree, food and gifts but for also delivering a Merry Christmas to a family in need.

Hazardous Incident Team receives certification

On December 7th a State of California evaluator visited Station 29 and examined HIT 29's equipment, records, and procedures to determine if they met the standards for transition from a Type II to a Type I Hazardous incident Team. When the evaluator had completed it was very evident that our team met and exceeded all standards needed. A Type I Haz Mat team is marked by their ability to operate on incidents involving known substances, unknown substances, radioactive materials as well as chemical and biological weapons. PPE includes turn-outs through totally encapsulating vapor tight suits. A Type I Haz Mat team requires seven personnel all of whom are Haz Mat Specialists each having at least 240 hrs of specialized training. Congratulations to the entire Haz mat team, all of station 29 and administration for supporting this vision of providing the best personnel the best training and equipment.

Craig Allyn Rose captures First Place

Fire Department photographer Craig Allyn Rose captured first place at the 2010 CPF Photo Contest.

On Wednesday February 24th at 2:41 hrs the SJFD responded to a craftsman style home in downtown SJ. Numerous callers were reporting a house on fire. When crews arrived on scene they discovered smoke and fire on the first floor and basement. An aggressive fire attack was initiated including a search of the interior. In the photo you can see Fire Engineer Matt McIntyre as he ascended the ladder to vent the roof as the fire began to spread to the second floor. When asked about the award Craig stated, "I didn't expect to win this year, but I am incredibly honored to be able to be in the position to capture the hard work of San Jose's bravest.

Los Bomberos and the SJFD making this a better Holiday for those in need

Over this past weekend Los Bomberos of Northern California, members of the San Jose Fire Department, Local 230 and the community got together to make sure that less fortunate children will have a great Christmas. On Friday the annual Holiday tradition of the Toy Wrap continued. This year over 600 families will benefit from the volunteer's efforts. Santa Clause, aka "Spanish Clause" (Martin Mora) was also on hand to receive the children's hopes for Christmas morning. Albert Hernandez serves as the project coordinator and has plenty of help from Mike Del Bando, the Bombero organization and friends and family of the SJFD. On Saturday Julian Molloy recruited another group of SJFD volunteers who built hundreds of bicycles to give away to families that would not otherwise have this opportunity.

The true spirit of the Holiday Season continues to be seen in the giving hearts of our fire department family. Their efforts have assured that over 1000 kids will have the thrill of waking up Christmas morning to presents under the tree.

2010 Holiday Parade

On December 5th the San Jose Fire Department and the Fire Museum participated in the 2010 Holiday Parade on the streets in down town San Jose. This was the 29th year of this Holiday tradition which brought out approximately 100,000 spectators. The Fire Museum had five apparatus in the parade including a 1905 Cadillac in which Fire Chief Willie McDonald led the way. Former SJFD Captain Sam Seibert was driven in the 1928 Torpedo in which he was very instrumental in the frame off restoration. Sam began his career with the SJFD in 1946 and retired in 1976. SJFD Joins in on the Green Vision Clean Energy Showcase

On December 8th the City of San Jose hosted the San Jose Green Vision Clean Energy Showcase across from the street from City Hall. Through a labor/management collaborative effort the SJFD was able to build one of the roof props that holds two solar panel displays. This interactive showcase will serve as a knowledge hub for visitors from across the Silicon Valley , providing hands-on education, experience, and information on solar, wind and energy efficiency technologies enabling the community's participation in San Jose's Green Vision. The showcase will house demonstrations of cutting edge technologies and services available on the market today and in the future. At the conclusion of the interactive showcase the SJFD will retain the prop and be able to use it in the future for ongoing training. Captain Matt Pass spoke to the visitors as the subject matter expert regarding Solar Voltaic Systems and he continues to be the Fire Departments best advocate that has led to safer systems and better code development.

SJFD gives High School students a private tour

On December 1st the James Lick High School Fire Service Pathway Program toured the BFO Campus and Fire Station No. 30 Captain Mike Patterson and Fire Engineer Howard Morton led the event and showed the students what it takes to become a firefighter. Howard also spoke to the students about our Fire Explorer Program. These young adults are on the right path and may some day fulfill their ambition to be a Fire Service professional. SJFD joins the memorial procession for fallen Marine.

The Patriot Riders who escort the bodies of military personnel who have been killed in combat requested that the SJFD assist as they escorted one of San Jose's own. Lance Corporal Arden Buenagua was killed in combat on November 24th in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. He was eulogized at Life Gate Church in Milpitas on December 4th. En route to his final resting place E19, E2, T2, T30, E4, E10, T14, E14, E29, T29, E7 and the Battalion Chiefs staged on various overpasses and stood at attention as the funeral procession traveled underneath. The apparatus lights were on and the crews saluted Lance Corporal Buenagua for his service to our Country. Special thanks to Fire Communications Senior Public Safety Dispatcher Tracy Deitschman who helped coordinate this effort. Pictured above is the crew of Engine Company No. 4. Grand Opening of Fire Station 19

On November 20th a grand opening ceremony took place at the new Fire Station No. 19 located at 3292 Sierra Road. The apparatus floor was full as Assistant Chief Teresa Reed served as the MC and Introduced Fire Chief Willie McDonald, Mayor Chuck Reed, Council Member Kansen Chu, and Assistant director of public works David Sykes whom all shared their thoughts and gratitude for this new station. Fire Station 19 is a 6,400 square foot building that is very user friendly and will continue to be an integral part of this North East San Jose community. This station is another result of the $159 million dollar Public Safety Bond that the voters passed in 2002. Station 19 crews, enjoy your new station!

SJFF's "Fill the Boot"

On Saturday November 27th a dedicated group of San Jose Firefighters braved the wet and cold weather to hit the streets to collect much needed funds for the San Jose Firefighters Burn Foundation. Eight firefighters helped out by receiving donations from motorists as they stopped at the intersection of Almaden Expressway and Blossom Hill Rd to "fill the boot". On this Saturday afternoon they collected over $6,000.00 that will go to the care, treatment, and rehabilitation of thermal, chemical, contact, electrical and radiation injuries. Thank you to the following firefighters for volunteering their time and helping out this great cause.

On Thursday November 18th the Optimist Society honored CA Robert Culbertson as Firefighter of the Year. During the last two years Robert has served as the Apparatus Officer as well as a PIO. His dedication to his work was evident in the many projects and successes that he orchestrated as part of the Bureau of Support Services. He has returned to the line and will no doubt continue that drive and determination as the Company Officer on Engine No. 4

Fire Station 2 Dedication Ceremony

On Saturday November 13th the new fire station 2 was officially dedicated. Over 250 community members, firefighters, City Government officials, and others were present during the ceremony. On this day several retired station 2 personnel were also on hand including 91 years young Captain Seibert, and long time fire engine 2 driver Lawrence Summers. Fire Chief McDonald made a brief presentation to commemorate the stations dedication and Assistant Chief Teresa Reed served as MC and thanked all those that helped make this beautiful station a reality. She made it a point to give special thanks to Council Person Nora Campos for her dedication to this project and her continued dedication to all of the residents in District 5. CA Pfirrman was also recognized for his role as the fire department liaison making sure that the finished product had specific input from the firefighters that will be assigned to work there. A great BBQ was prepared by crew members of station 2 and other firefighters to ensure that this was a special day and event.

Veteran's Day Parade

On November 11th the San Jose Fire Department took part of the annual Veteran's Day Parade. Truck 1 and old Truck 4 were set up as a ladder bridge proudly flying the American Flag as the parade members passed under her.

President Woodrow Wilson first proclaimed Armistice Day (Veterans Day) in 1919 to honor Veterans of all wars both past and present. It is a day to honor the living and dead heroes and

she-roes that made the commitment to protect our liberties.

Elmer Davis wrote,"This nation will remain the land of the free only so long as it is the home of the brave."

We are all grateful for their continued sacrifice as they were, and are the definition of true patriots. Cheers for the living and tears for the dead.

"Light of Lights" ceremony

On December 8th, 2010 at 6pm The Center for Living with Dying presents a healing workshop. Sponsored by the San Jose Fire Department, this event will be held at the SJFD BFO campus. "Light of Lights", a candle lighting ceremony. This will be an uplifting evening that will bring together a community to light candles, experience beautiful music and the comradeship of each other. This is a wonderful way for the community to get together and honor those that they love who have died or are suffering from life threatening illness. The event also honors first responders. Breakfast at station 10

On Friday October 22, BC Reuben Torres and BC Robert Sapien along with station 10 personnel and Senior Staff hosted a breakfast for the 49 firefighters that were laid off. The breakfast was a time for us to remind our brothers and sisters that they will always be a member of the FD family. As family members we came to the table and ate some great food and heard some inspiring words from Fire Chief McDonald and BC Torres. As we look toward the future we still have hope that the 49 will rejoin our ranks and re take their place along side the rest of us as we continue to serve this city. Thank you to all of the volunteers that helped make this BIG event feel like a Sunday brunch around the kitchen table in a firehouse.

Turkey Trot

The Applied Materials "Silicon Valley Turkey Trot" is entering it's 6th year and has raised more than 1 million dollars for charity. This year the Children's Health Network, The Housing Trust, and Second Harvest Food bank will be the charities that benefit. This race, almost exclusively run by volunteers, hopes to attract an even bigger crowd in 2010- nearly 15,000 participants are expected! Inside Edition talks with SJFD

The TV program Inside Edition came to San Jose to feature a Good Samaritan who helped out a man that suffered a cardiac episode. In August of 2009 while jogging at Willow Glen HS a male suddenly collapsed. A Good Samaritan immediately called 911 and began CPR on the patient within one minute with the assistance of our own Fire Communications dispatcher Jessica Araiza. Engine Company 6 arrived on scene and took over patient care, defibrillated the patient and got spontaneous respiration's back while still on scene. Pictured here are Heather who is the Good Samaritan, Jim who is the cardiac arrest survivor, Captain Dave Parker and Fire Inspector Jason Bivens who were on Engine 6 on that day. Because of Heather's quick decision to get involved and the assistance she received from SJFD Fire Communications and Engine company 6. Jim had a full recovery and recently got married. This story is also published in the book "Chicken Soup for the Soul" Look for Dave and Jason on an upcoming episode of Inside Edition.

County Fire Chiefs and SJFD welcomes Bomberos

During the week of October 3rd the Santa Clara County Fire Chiefs and their respective fire departments hosted the Bombero 2010 program. This year 22 fire fighters from Mexico and South America came here to train on emergency operations so they could take back information and new standards to their departments back home. Several Santa Clara County Fire Departments hosted, trained, and housed these firefighters during their stay. Battalion Chief Jose Guerrero taught them ICS and CA Ramon Gamino, CA Javier Acencio, FF Guillermo Culajay, CA Jesus Corona, FF Tony Conde, and FE Alfonso Alvarez taught them FF survival and RIC operations. Los Bomberos of Northern California sponsored a lunch and dinner during their stay. This international training event was successful because of all of the volunteers who were involved. Great job!

SJFD Station 16 turns 50!

On Sunday October 3rd station 16 personnel hosted a 50th anniversary celebration. Several retirees were there to enjoy the days events as well as members of the community. Fire Engineer Mike Gomez served as the MC and speakers from years gone by as well as current station 16 personnel shared stories from their station 16 experiences. A Fire Department helmet was presented to Council person Nora Campos for her continued support of the station and to all of the residents in East San Jose. Station 16 crews also cooked up some great BBQ that was enjoyed by all. The Fire Department has always been a profession that is steeped in tradition. Over the past 50 years station 16's men and women have held a tradition of establishing a deep connection with the community that they serve, and have prided themselves as being a reflection of the people in that East side neighborhood. Congratulations to the fire station and to all SJFD personnel that have made this a special place to work. We know that in the next 50 years this community will be just as well served as they have been in the first 50.

San Jose Firefighters offer Reward

San Jose Fire Fighters have offered a $10,000.00 reward toward the arrest and conviction of the person or persons that were responsible for the Trace Elementary School Fire. Fire Chief Willie McDonald, Battalion Chief Kevin Conant, Captain Joel Phelan and the crews from Truck 1 and Engine 7 were all on hand at a press conference when a check was presented to the San Jose Unified Board President. Captain Joel Phelan stated, "Our fire fighters believe that our schools are the cornerstones of our neighborhoods" and "We must help ensure that our neighborhoods are safe and that this criminal is brought to justice."

We can never replace the possessions and memories that were lost in the fire but we hope that this reward will help get a criminal off the street so he or she can not victimize the lives and property of any other San Jose residents.

Please welcome SJFD's newest solo dispatchers at fire communications. The training process to get to this point is approximately 10 - 11 months and began in September 2009. This includes becoming certified in Emergency Medical Dispatch and Emergency Fire Dispatch. The San Jose Fire Communications Division is an Accredited Center of Excellence for the Emergency Medical Dispatch Protocols and these three individuals will help assure that we continue to have the best dispatchers in the State. Oakland A's Honor Firefighters at Firefighter Appreciation Night.

On September 11th the Oakland Athletics honored firefighters from the bay area during their firefighter appreciation night. Fire Chief Willie McDonald along with Trish Tapia, Mark Roberts, and Albert Hernandez were on the field during the pre game ceremonies. Our own Captain Doug Stewart was also recognized for his distinguished career by throwing out the first pitch. Everyone had a great time getting together before and during the game. 9-11 Patriot Day Remembrance

A dozen homes saved!

September 2nd several calls came into communications reporting a field on fire. More reports stated that the fire was quickly moving up a hill toward 12 homes. While en route BC Kevin Conant and BC Steve Alavarado requested a Tier II early to set needed resources in place to protect the homes as well as to initiate an aggressive fire attack. This fire was in San Jose City and SRA jurisdiction so Cal Fire also responded. This collaborative effort in 100 degree temperatures kept the fire damage to 7 1/2 acres with no fire damage to the homes on top of the hill. One local resident told me that she expected to see at least one home go up in flames. She was pleasantly surprised and impressed by the firefighting effort that allowed every neighbor on the hill top to go home in time for dinner.

Another AED save!

On Saturday August 28th a middle aged man fell to the floor unconscious at the San Jose International Airport. Two passengers began administering CPR while two Airport SJPD officers responded with a Airport AED. The AED was used on the patient. San Jose Fire Department station 20 personnel along with USAR 5 got on scene took over patient care, shocked the patient two additional times and initiated Advanced Life support measures. The survivor was taken to O'Connor hospital and is expected to be released by the end of the week. This had a successful outcome because it was a total team effort that our own Jack Grogan would have been proud of.

A reserve San Jose Fire Engine was recently used in a Comcast Sports Net commercial production. The significance of "19" is that it refers to our own San Jose Sharks Center Joe Thorton. Truck 13 Crew saves Man and Bird

Truck company 13 was dispatched to a report of a man stuck in a tree. The man had been trying to rescue his pet parrot by having his friend winch him up into the tree with his jeep. The winch cable cut into the tree and got stuck. FF Asha Wagner climbed up the aerial, put a harness on the stranded climber and brought him down safely, he was un-injured. The aerial was then repositioned and FE Mike Murray, (aka "the bird whisperer") climbed the ladder and retrieved the frightened parrot. Great job Truck company 13 in saving man and beast!

Off duty Firefighters make someones day.

Recently Fire Inspector Luis Chacon coordinated a fun day at Lake Calero for a group of physically challenged kids. Several off duty firefighters and volunteers including Alex Pons, Scott Trotter, Frank Ryan, Scott Nelson, Larry Chua, Richard Anderson, Joe Rondone, Tom Correa, Dominique Ramos, BC Kevin Conant, Joel Phelan, and Mark Skeen brought their boats, inter tubes, jet skis, and other water gear. Each of the 28 youths were able to get out on the water and enjoy the day with the assistance of firefighters on the shore and in the boats. The City of San Jose Parks and Recreation Therapeutic Services provided transportation for the kids to and from the Lake. Local 230 also chipped in to provide the BBQ. I saw the look on the kids faces as they returned from their time on the water. It was so evident to me that they had a great time and were thrilled with the days events. As I spoke to one of the firefighters helping out, I thanked him for volunteering and making this day special for these kids. He told me that he was glad that he could be there but did not expect to be so inspired by the kids positive attitudes and sense of gratitude. CA Rangel###

Fire Station 7 and the SJFFBF give back

On August 4th the crews at fire station 7 hosted a brunch for Trace School faculty, administrators and the community. During this event that was MC'ed by BC Kevin Conant two presentations were made. The San Jose Firefighters Burn Foundation presented a check in the amount of $5000.00 dollars to the School District Superintendent, Dr. Vincent Matthews and Captain Jason Suarez presented a framed American flag that was found among the burned rubble inside of Trace School. Station 7 crew FE Ed Cueves, FF George Guerrero, and FF Jason Krassow also assisted with the presentation. BC Jim Voreyer read a poem that he wrote about the flag that was found. This poem is also framed, under the flag. The 6th alarm fire at Trace Elementary school on July 5th may have damaged the school but it has brought a community together and San Jose Fire Station 7 with the SJFFBF have become an integral part of the rebuilding process.

USAR 5 gets certified

Recently our USAR team was officially certified as a Heavy Rescue Resource with specialized training in the areas of Rescue systems 1 & 2, Trench rescue, and Structural collapse. In order to get this certification an outside agency evaluated the personnel and conducted a comprehensive equipment inventory and evaluation all the way down to the nails carried on the apparatus. This certification is recognized across the nation and will allow the USAR to become a resource eligible for State wide deployment. Congratulations Usarians!

Station 27 "caught in the act"

On July 8th a gentleman knocked on Fire Station 27's door asking where the closest auto shop was located. FE David Gutierrez and FE Paul Stamm did one better then direct him to the shop. Caught in the act here, they rolled up their sleeves and ended up changing this mans tire in front of the station. He was on his way back home to the Yosemite Valley when his tire blew out. He was very grateful to David and Paul and was back on the road in no time. This above and beyond act of community service is just one example of our deep connection to this City's neighborhoods in which we serve.

Trace Elementry School Fire

On July 5th in the early morning multiple calls came into communications reporting a school on fire. Engine Company 7 was the first unit on scene and reported heavy fire conditions in the main part of the school. A 2nd and 3rd alarm were quickly requested. Early Thermal Imaging Camera readings indicated temperatures of 1000 degrees at the ceiling level. The fire which had a good head start quickly spread to 80% of the building. Four ladder towers were put in place along with several deck guns to contain and control this blaze. Several portable classroom's were saved by the quick acting firefighters who provided structure protection and the new two story building was spared. SJFD battles large commercial structure fire

On July 3rd USAR 5 arrived on scene at Rogers Avenue. The 150' x 400' commercial building was filled with smoke and had fire quickly spreading at the ceiling level. Multiple alarms were requested and the fire was fought with a defensive strategy. Approximately 100 firefighters were used to contain and control the fire. After the fire, crews went back inside the building to retrieve important records from two businesses that were effected. One business owner personally contacted my office and expressed her thanks for the effort that crews made on that day.

Tier 1-Well Done!

On July 3rd a vegetation fire occurred on communications hill. BC Paul Schulller and BC Gaudenz Panholzer acted as IC and division Mary. The fire spread to areas of the hill that were too steep for even our brush patrols. As I drove to the Hillcap Ave. side of the fire I looked up and saw several SJFD personnel working the left flank with handtools. Their teamwork was evident, and their pace was extraordinary. This effort kept the fire from spreading to the next hill and ridge top. The firefighters that took on this challenge were, CA Jan Gall, CA Don Alexander, FE Paul Marshal, FF Sundance Scardino, and FF Steven Clet. CA Joe Grimaldo led another team of firefighters as they did a progressive hose lay anchoring on Hilcap Ave. As seen above, this fire was difficult to surround and had it not been for the crews on scene, fire spread could have been more extensive. Great job.

SJFD helps rescue victim at Alum Rock Park

Wednesday June 30th, the SJFD was dispatched to a report of a hiker stranded on a steep hillside at Alum Rock Park. Our USAR task force with the assistance of other SJFD companies hiked in 45 minutes to find the victim. The person was stuck on a loose and very steep hillside approx 200 feet from the creek bed and several hundred feet from the ridge top. Battalion Chief Jim Voreyer worked in conjunction with Cal Fire to develop a plan as well as two contingency plans. Cal Fire launched copter 901 and used a long line rescue operation to pluck the victim off the hill and bring him to safety. Great operation and joint effort by all.

Engine 24 crew to the rescue!

On June 13th Engine Company 24 was dispatched to a report of possible drowning at Creekside Cabana Club on Yerba Buena Ave. At this neighborhood pool several kids were swimming when a life guard noticed a girl floating face down. The life guard immediately brought the girl out of the pool. A quick assessment determined that she was not breathing. The life guard initiated rescue breathing until the SJFD arrived on scene. Engine 24 arrived and discovered that the little girl had begun to breath on her own. 24's crew assumed patient care and provided ALS/BLS care. The little girl was taken to the hospital where she was later released and is in good health. She and her family visited station 24 and have expressed her thanks to the alert life guard at the pool. This event had a positive outcome because of the early intervention by the life guard and the care and treatment provided by Engine Company 24. Good Job!

SJFD teams up with the Girl Scouts of America

Recently the San Jose Fire Department teamed up with the Girl Scouts of America at fire station 26. FF Josh Ellis was the fire department liaison working with the Girl Scouts of America, together they had an open house at fire station 26. Fire safety materials along with smoke alarms were distributed to members of the community. The crew of Engine 26A was also on hand to help out and offered their expertise to several citizens. This effort is another example of how the SJFD continues to be a integral part of providing community service in the City of San Jose. Great job!

SJFD Hosts Joint Fire Academy

On June 10th the San Jose Fire Department hosted the Joint Fire Academy Live burn at the BFO campus. We also provided some overhead and Captain Polverino who taught the TIC segment. Participating agencies included; Palo Alto, Sunnyvale, and County Fire. This was another example that demonstrated the great working relationship that has been established within the County for all fire departments.

SJFD Roof Prop back in business!

The roof prop located at the BFO Campus is officially back in business. All crews are welcome to schedule a time and come down to get valuable hands on training with roof operations, (See SB# 175). On this day Truck company 14 trained cutting vent holes on both the flat and pitched sides of the roof prop. The smoke machine is also available to help simulate smoke release from a charged attic. The roof prop is available Monday thru Friday.

SJFD Station 24 makes the front page!

Recently The Evergreen Times Newsletter spent some time with the crew of Fire station 24A. The newsletter wanted to interview fire personnel about the new fire station that is under construction and share their memories about working at station 24. The new station originally was to be named station 36 but it appears that it will remain named 24. It will be a two company two story building that will replace the current station that was built in 1967, hopefully it will be completed by mid-2011.

Off Duty SJFD employees come to the rescue

On May 14th at 23:00 hrs. Captain Reggie Williams and Fire Engineer Mark Roberts were at the Clairmont Hotel in Oakland when they observed a person collapse. They immediately called 911 and came to his aid. The patient was determined to be unconscious and pulseless. CPR was initiated and an AED was quickly provided by hotel security. The patient was defibrillated once. Two additional cycles of CPR were administered before return of spontaneous circulation was noticed. Oakland FD arrived on scene and took over patient care. The patient was taken to the emergency room where he received emergency bi pass surgery. At the time of this writing he is resting comfortably and is expected to make a full recovery. He received CPR within one minute of collapse and received defibrillation within three minutes. Captain Williams and Fire Engineer Roberts decision to get involved made a difference that not only assisted this patient but most likely saved his life. They are another example that demonstrates that when you are a San Jose Fire Department member you may be off the clock but you are never off duty when it comes to serving the community.

SJFD members recognized at EMS Conference

On May 19th Captain Dave Huseman, Captain Mike Van Elgort, and the crew of Engine Company 4,- higher class Captain Daniel Delong, FE Russ Davis, FF Khader Nimeh, and FF/P Chris Salcido were recognized for their outstanding achievement in the EMS field at the 2010 Santa Clara County EMS Conference. The event was hosted by Applied Materials. Each year EMS personnel are recognized for their outstanding achievement related to contributions at the County level as well as outstanding performance in the field. This year Captain Huseman was recognized for his teaching and mentorship throughout the County related to EMS issues. Captain Van Elgort received recognition as being an EMS advocate who sought out needed changes for improved treatments. Engine Company 4 crew was recognized for an incident at San Jose City College during a high school football game. On November 26th, 2009 Engine 4 responded to SJCC for a report of a head injury sustained during a football game. From the time of dispatch to delivery to the emergency room only 8 minutes passed. Because of the professional care and timely treatment the young man received, the outcome was positive. Congratulations to all of this years recipients. Your dedication to our department and the EMS field has made a positive difference throughout the County and has made a lifelong difference in a young man's life. Great job!

SJFD assists with safe landing at Reed Hillview Airport

On Saturday May 15. SJFD dispatchers received a report of a single engine plane that was inbound with malfunctioning landing gear. There were three people on board the aircraft, two adults and one child. SJFD sent a full first alarm assignment, and the IC asked for additional resources to support this incident. A unified command was set up with SJFD, AMR, PD, Santa Clara County Airports Dept, and SCC EMS Duty Chief. Because of the successful Unified Command and integrated communications, the pilot was able to communicate directly with the command staff to coordinate a landing strategy. As SJFD prepared for his landing the pilot circled the airport to burn off excessive fuel. The pilot was able to perform a controlled "belly landing", skidding safely to a stop. Fire crews covered the area around the plane with class B foam in case any fuel was present. The occupants of the aircraft were assisted to a safe location as the fire crews secured power to the plane and checked for leaking fuel. All three passengers were uninjured. The challenge with this event was to amass the necessary resources to cover as many potential contingencies as possible in a short period of time. The IC, BC Anderson, established Suppression, Extrication, and Medical groups, and assigned tactical objectives to all on scene resources prior to the landing. Once all potential dangers were abated the incident was turned over to airport authorities. ###

Media Day at Wild Land Training

During the last week the Media was invited to observe, video and interview

San Jose Fire Department crews as they trained in real time during simulated wildland firefighting operations. Firefighters complete this training every year as part of a comprehensive curriculum which helps them prepare for the upcoming wildland season. Lessons learned on the training ground are valuable components to the safety and success during actual wildland fires.

NBC, KCBS, and KLIV were some of the Media present. This training and the San Jose Fire Department was featured in a media loop over the entire day on KCBS and was on the 6 o'clock news on NBC. Reporters were given a Media Awareness Information Packet and all access to the training.

Passing of George Silveria

On April 8th Former San Jose Fire Department member George Siveria passed away. George retired from station 20. He was a proud member of our department until he retired in 1996. "Battle of the Blue" East vs.West

On Friday afternoon some of our fire department family got together for the annual "East vs West" softball game. This year the West prevailed behind steady hitting and good fielding. The East team did well scoring 5 runs but it wasn't enough on this day. The event was a complete success. Everybody enjoyed a BBQ with the award winning recipe cooked by Mike Tapia and music supplied by Brian Aquino. Special thanks to Greg Tuyor for helping set up the event and all of the volunteers, families and "athletes" who participated.

Project "Smoke Alarm Give Away" a success!

On April 25th several members of the San Jose Fire Department, Los Bomberos of Northern California, and the Girl Scouts of America teamed up to distribute approximately 200 smoke alarms. A properly installed and working smoke alarm is the single most important way to alert residents of a potential fire. This volunteer team walked four Mobile Home parks door to door and talked to residents about fire safety and the importance of having smoke alarms installed in their home. In addition to the smoke alarm give away several alarms were installed in mobile homes where the occupants needed help. This volunteer effort has provided multiple families a life saving tool. Their lending hand has made a difference and can mean a life saved, keeping a family intact, and a community safe. Great Job!

On Saturday April 10th, 57 Fire department members were recognized for their excellence in achievement, duty, and valor during the 2010 Fire Department Awards Ceremony. The highlight of the event included the presentation of the John McMillan Family Integrity and Trust Award. This award was posthumously given to Firefighter Felix Medrano. Felix's wife Belinda and son Robert,(pictured)were in attendance to accept. Congratulations to all of the award winners and the entire Fire Department family for their on going commitment to providing the best service possible to the community and to each other. SJFD Dispatchers Walk for Breast Cancer

2010 marks the third consecutive year that SJFD Dispatchers will be participating in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer in San Francisco. As many know, they became involved in the walk after SJFD Dispatcher Cindy Hawke was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007. Cindy lost her battle in 2008, but the dispatchers continue to participate to raise money for breast cancer awareness, prevention and treatment. Each registered walker commits to raise at least $1,800.00. All money raised for the San Francisco walk stays in the bay area and is 100% tax deductible. San Jose Firefighters Climb For Life

Nine San Jose Firefighters led by team Captain Ryan Shea participated in the "Fight for Air Climb" which took place on March 27th in San Francisco. These firefighters donated their time, procured sponsors and climbed 52 flights of stairs in full turn outs and SCBA's. Their endeavor contributed to the total of $315,000 that was raised to assist the American Lung Association in providing education, advocacy and research programs that improve life and prevent lung disease. Our own dispatcher Monika Kirk and her husband also participated in the climb and stayed to volunteer for the rest of the day. Smoke Alarm alerts family to deadly fire.

A working smoke alarm alerted an elderly family that there duplex was on fire in the early morning of March 25th. SJFD units arrived at the scene and discovered a working fire in the garage and attic. An aggressive fire attack was initiated that was able to limit the damage to the connecting unit. In the event of a fire, a smoke alarm can save your life and those of your loved ones. They are the single most important means of preventing house and apartment fire fatalities by providing an early warning signal. Check to make sure you have them in your house or apartment and that they are in working condition.

San Jose Fire Crew uses Defibrillator on High School Student

On Friday March 19th 2010. Engine company 24 responded to a local High School for a report of a person down. High school students quickly called 911 and within 5 1/2 minutes Engine 24 arrived on scene and immediately began CPR on a High School student that was unconscious in cardiac arrest. The fire department crew also used their defibrillator to successfully shock and cardiovert the patient . Doctors have moved the patient from the ICU to a transitional care unit where he is expected to make a full recovery.

Firefighters and Mesothelioma

We understand that risking our lives to save others can be part of the job. When we face immediate and obvious dangers we take necessary precautions to help ensure our safety. Unfortunately, we also face exposure to asbestos and many times we may not be aware if the substance is present in the structure. Asbestos exposure can be deadly since it is directly connected to causing mesothelioma cancer. The dust lingers in the air around the area and can also be trapped within clothing or settled onto our apparatus and equipment. Therefore we can become exposed at the fire ground, the fire station, and there have been cases of asbestos fibers being carried home and exposing family members. To help prevent exposure, as firefighters we should take time to clean our turnouts and equipment after a call, and should visit doctors regularly for check ups. Currently there is no cure for mesothelioma, but if the disease is detected early on, there exists several treatment options that have produced favorable results. Preparing For The Big One

The San Jose Fire Department is hosting a three day Santa Clara County Technical Rescue Drill at the BFO Campus training site. As many as 50 firefighters from neighboring departments will train each day. Attendees test their abilities to come together as mutual aid agencies and construct multiple emergency based shoring structures. This prepares for large scale disasters when such skills are required in complex and rescue operations. Participating agencies include; San Jose Fire Department, Santa Clara County Fire Department, Santa Clara City Fire Department, Palo Alto Fire Department, Milpitas Fire Department, and Moffett Field Fire Department.

The American Legion Honors CA Jose Chavez and the late Jack Grogan

The American Legion for many years has honored Firefighers through their Public Safety Awards Program. This year they have chosen CA Jose Chavez and the late Jack Grogan and family to receive the award for Sustained Superior Service for 2010 for their continuing effort in making the City of San Jose a "Heart Safe City". The Heart Safe City project's mission statement is as follows, "Reduce morbidity and mortality associated with cardiac related events" Through CA Chavez' and Jack's dedicated effort the City of San Jose will soon increase the number of AED's from 160 to 500. The program will also dramatically increase the number of residents and visitors to San Jose trained in CPR. The first year program goal would be 20,000 people. Time to Check your Smoke Alarms

This weekend, March 13th and 14th we will be setting our clocks to daylight savings time. The time change is a good reminder to check your smoke alarms and replace your batteries. More than 66% of home fire deaths that occured between 2003-2006 were in homes without working smoke alarms. A working smoke alarm significantly increases your chance of surviving a deadly home fire. A properly installed and maintained smoke detector is the only thing in your home that can alert you and your family to a fire 24 hours a day, seven days a week. And make sure you test the detector Monthly. Choose an annual date such as time change, when you will remember to maintain your detector in tip top condition. Check the manufacturer's expiration date on the label, all smoke detectors should be replaced about every ten years. Clean dust away from the slots so that the smoke can enter freely. San Jose Fire Department remembers Fire Inspector El Hajj Malik

El Hajj Malik passed away Friday March 5th, 2010. He was a member of the San Jose Fire Department from 1975 to 2004. El Hajj spent most of his time on the line assigned to Engine Company #7. He later promoted to the rank of Fire Inspector. He enjoyed playing tennis, and riding his motorcycle as a member of the "Soul Brothers Motorcycle Club" in which he was the Vice President. El Hajj was also a proud member of the Santa Clara County Black Firefighters Association. Above all he loved spending time with his family. He is survived by his wife Andrea and his son Malik Jr. His family and friends will celebrate his life on March 12th at 11:00 a.m. at The First Assembly of God Church. 486 Button Ave. Manteca CA

The San Jose Fire Department Fondly Remembers

Jack Grogan.

On Sunday February 28th, 2010 Jack Grogan passed away. Jack was a volunteer with the San Jose Fire Department for the past five years. He worked closely with Captain Jose Chavez to develop a sustainable HeartSafe City Program for the City of San Jose. In addition he co-founded the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Association which grew to be the largest non-profit advocacy organization focused on cardiac arrest. As a volunteer with the San Jose Fire Department Jack was passionate about preventing unnecessary death due to SCA. He testified before the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Congress and the California legislature. His efforts helped pass legislation requiring California fitness centers to have AED's. As a Korean War veteran he served in the Marine Corps and later went to work for I.B.M. where he had a 43 year career. His drive to fight cardiac arrest was fueled by his own experience as being a SCA survivor. On November 16th, 2002 while on a plane Jack suffered a cardiac episode. Fortunately a Doctor on the plane began early CPR and a flight attendant used an AED on him saving his life. After that episode he had triple bi-pass surgery and began his mission to promote the use of and procurement of AED's across the City. His biggest joy was his wife, Anita, and all of his family. Jack said that he was experiencing a "second chance at life". The people and equipment were there to save him once and he wanted that opportunity for everyone. Mr. Grogan was an asset to the San Jose Fire Department and to all mankind and will be missed by all. Jack was 73. Anita and her family welcome contact thru their home address and e-mail account. SJFD reponds to a ruptured gas line.

At 11:06 am San Jose Fire Department responded to a gas rupture at 2933 Alum Rock Ave. This is the site of Fire Station #2 which in the process of being rebuilt. Initial reports put the gas line at 2", however it was later determined that the gas line was 1/2". Fire crews arrived on scene within 5 minutes, secured the area and deployed water to prevent static electricity as an ignition source. PG&E arrived and capped the leak. During the event, residents were asked to shelter in place and Alum Rock Ave. was closed between Capitol Ave. and White Rd. The event was declared under control at 12:30 pm and the street was re- opened to traffic. There were no injuries reported.

SJFD and SCCBFA help earthquake victims in Haiti

The Santa Clara County Black Firefighters Association shoe drive "Soles4Souls" was a huge success!!! The San Jose Fire Department and members helped out by preparing all the shoes brought to nearby San Jose Fire Stations. As of Sunday, January 31st, a total of 146 bags holding 15 pairs of shoes per bag were delivered to Sport Chalet for transport to Haiti. That's over 2200 pairs of shoes! This could not have be possible without the generosity of the men and women who donated their time and effort towards this worthy cause.

Mark Roberts, President of SCCBFA was a driving force behind this charity event and says " I would like to thank the Office of the Fire Chief for supporting this drive by allowing the use of all San Jose Fire Stations as drop off locations and providing a van to use. I would like to give special thanks to BC Curtis Jacobson, FF Jason Bivens and FE Mel Meeks for spearheading this effort and seeing it through until the end."

27 NEW FIREFIGHTERS HIT THE STREET

Structure Fire in South San Jose this morning

Just before 8 o'clock this morning San Jose Fire dispatch received multiple calls about a house fire on Lathrop Dr. and Blossom Hill Rd. Smoke could be seen from miles away. A San Jose Police officer was passing by at the time of the fire and stopped to make sure the residents were out safely and they were. San Jose Fire Units arrived on scene within 5 minutes and were able to extinguish the blaze within 14 minutes. There was extensive damage to the residence, displacing 7 of them. No one was injured and Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the house, saving the neighbors home from fire damage. ###

Feb 5th, 2010, "Go Red for Women Day" heart disease awareness

On Friday, February 5, 2010, the City of San José will participate in Go Red for Women Day, the American Heart Association’s national call to increase awareness about heart disease which is the leading cause of death in the United States and claims the lives of 450,000 American women each year. In honor of loved ones we have lost, individuals who suffer from heart disease, and those we want to protect from heart disease, please join us in wearing red this Friday, February 5^th. The City of San Jose' Rotunda will be lit up red on Friday evening in an effort to bring attention to the importance of taking charge of our own heart health. At just after 9 am on Monday morning this precautionary 2nd alarm broke out on 3043 Remington Way in the east side of San Jose. Firefighters received reports of 20-30' flames in front of a residential home. It was a large motor home parked in front of the house that burned, plus a motor cycle and car parked close by. Firefighters were able to prevent the fire from spreading to the house. No injuries were reported.

Structure Fire: Roof Colapse; south San Jose

Just after midnight, January 20th, this 2nd Alarm fire broke out on 162 Bendorf Dr. in South San Jose. It was first reported to crews arriving on scene that there was someone trapped inside. It turned out to be a father and son in the backyard, unable to get out to the street. Crews had to cut down the fence in order to get to the father and son. The fire started in the living room of the single story condo. The resident stated he and a friend were watching TV and looked over to see their Christmas tree on fire. They quickly went to the fathers room and removed him to the backyard. The father is a parapalegic and had to be carried out. Fortunately for the residents they all got out safely because the fire took its toll on the home quickly consuming the entire residence. Fire crews and residents reported 30' flames upon our arrival. The roof colapsed shortly after firefighters arrived on scene, no one was hurt. Firefighters said it was extremely hot inside the home. Their quick work saved nearby homes as they were able to keep the fire to the one structure.
Important message: Remove Christmas trees from your house hold as soon as possible to prevent this type of fire from occuring. Christmas trees are usually purchased a few weeks before Christmas and dry out with the lights and the heat in the home. They are usually very dried out by the New Year and should be removed!!!

Pumping operation underway at Coyote Creek, south of Charcot. Crews are pumping from a manhole into the creek because high water levels in the creek cause the flap gate to close
River Oaks Pump Station @ Guadalupe River. Crews on site to reset Flap gate manhole frame and rim. Minor flooding in the vicinity of the pump station
Canoas Creek @ Redbird – As a precautionary measure, DOT pump crews are deploying to set up a portable pump – per the established response plan for that particular location

2nd Alarm Structure Fire : Christmas Tree and lights involved

A 2nd Alarm structure Fire broke out early this morning, 12:12am, rendering the homes living area a total loss. Firefighters were on scene in less that 3 minutes to find a condo in a fire blaze. Occupants stated they saw the Christmas tree start on fire and quickly went into their fathers room to get him out of the house. The son carried his paraplegic father to the backyard where Fire crews discovered his location after being told someone was trapped inside the house. The father was taken to the hospital for minor injuries. Fire Crews worked extremely hard to extinguish the blaze and prevent the fire from spreading to near by homes. The roof collapsed a short time after the fire had started and fire operations changed from offensive to a defensive mode where no one was allowed inside because of the probability of further collapse. The fire was under control an hour into the incident.

Lightning Strike the cause of Structure Fire Yesterday

We all hear about the guy who was hit by lightning in the mid-west but the likelihood of this happening here is very unlikely. This lightning strike hit the downspout and the electricity was conducted through the living area into the garage and heated the metal furnace. Look at the handle leaning against the furnace, it is actually welded to it! There were some common combustibles in between the furnace and the water heater. They were heated immediately to combustion and ignited creating a lot of smoke but little fire. There was no fire extension through the walls. There were three attached units, the one next to the affected unit had a copper pipe melted on the water heater; the others were not affected. The resident of the affected unit will have a place to stay as the utilities would not be restored.

FLOOD PREVENTION AND PREPAREDNESS TIPS:

* Ensure that all drains, gutters and downspouts are functioning properly. This is especially important for flat-roofed buildings.
* Keep ground-level drains and drainage areas (ditches, swales, small channels) free of debris.
* Move valuable or easily damaged items away from low-lying areas that may be prone to flooding.
* Identify and collect important documents that you may require in case of evacuation.
* Contact your insurance agent to assure that your flood and storm coverage is adequate and in effect.
* Review your Family Emergency Plan and prepare an Emergency Supply Kit that includes food, water, medications, flashlight, battery-powered radio, rain gear and first aid supplies.
* Plan for the needs of pets at home and if you are evacuated.
* Keep your vehicle fueled in case power is cutoff to local fueling stations.
* Identify the safe routes from your home or workplace to high ground.
* Establish out-of-state family contacts so that friends and relatives can determine your location and status.
* If necessary, consult an engineer or licensed contractor to design or build permanent water and debris control systems for your property.
* Landscape slope areas with plants that are fire retardant and suitable for erosion control.
* Keep sandbags, plywood, plastic sheeting, lumber, hand tools and other materials handy for addressing storm water issues.

TIPS FOR PERSONAL SAFETY DURING A FLOOD:

* Avoid the urge to sightsee. Remind all household members not to play or linger near flood control channels and storm drains.
* Do not walk through flowing water. Drowning is the number-one cause of flood deaths, mostly during flash floods. Currents can be deceptive; six inches of moving water can knock you off your feet.
* Do not drive through a flooded area. More people drown in their car than anywhere else. Do not drive around road barriers; the road or bridge may be washed out.
* Stay away from power lines and electrical wires. The number-two flood killer after drowning is electrocution. Electrical currents can travel through water.

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO IF YOU FALL IN MOVING WATER?

* Avoid getting into this dangerous situation.
* Remain calm. Don't waste energy yelling for help after someone has spotted you.
* Get ready to be rescued.
* Try to float on your back with your legs straight and your feet pointed downstream.
* Use your legs to shove yourself away from obstructions.
* Keep your head up so that you can see where you are going.
* Watch for obstacles and debris! If a tree or other stationary object is blocking the channel, forcing water over it, try to flip over on your stomach and approach the obstacle head-on, crawling over the top of it.
* Most victims in swift water die when they get pinned against obstacles, or get trapped in submerged debris and vegetation.

Fire Strikes South San José Home

Just before 4:00 AM, July 5, 2009 units of the San Jose Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 6484 Cranbrook Court on the city's south side. Upon their arrival, first due Engine Company 22 discovered heavy fire conditions throughout the three-story home. After stretching an attack line, and entering the structure through the front door, firefighters were driven back by the intense heat and smoke leading to a defensive operation.

According to the occupants smoke detectors alerted them to the blaze allowing all four to escape without injury, including two small dogs. Unfortunately the home and most of its contents were a complete loss.

Approximately 50 firefighters, under the direction of Incident Commander Kevin Conant, Operations Chief Paul Schuller, and Department Safety Officer Jaun Diaz, were able to prevent the flames that had engulfed much of the home from spreading to adjacent structures.

One firefighter was injured and transported to an area hospital after being struck by a ladder on his left hip. The firefighter is expected to be released from the hospital today.

It is believed that the cause of the fire was accidental.
