On Thursday, June 19, 2014, at 1622 hours, the San José Fire Department and CAL FIRE were notified of a working structure fire in the 13000 block of Clayton Road. The initial report of the blaze was made by the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Department helicopter while flying in the vicinity.
Firefighters responding to the scene reported a large column of smoke rising from the area, which was visible throughout the Santa Clara Valley. The first units to arrive confirmed the working fire with two homes fully engulfed in flames with fire spreading to the adjacent vegetation. Initially firefighters were able to contain the fire to the two homes, several cars and the property surrounding the homes.
As crews worked to extinguish hot spots in and around the structures the fire spotted a few hundred feet away on a hillside and began to move slowly up the hill. Thanks to light winds and aggressive action by firefighters, including the Alma Helitack crew, the forward progress of the spot fire was quickly stopped.
Crews remained on scene for several hours to douse flare ups and make sure the fire did not rekindle. No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
